Learning can be really hard. Building things that people find useful, interesting, or enjoyable is even more difficult. Unfortunately for me, learning and building things are two activities that drive a lot of my personal and professional fulfillment, and that’s what brought me to game development and what brings me here.
I’m here to announce the launch of our blog, where my business and game development partner and I plan to share some behind the scenes insights from our game development journey.
After a year of working closely together and getting through the launch of our first game (more on that later), we decided that we want to share more of our learnings, insights, and meanderings from the process of building a small game studio.
Why we are here
We wanted to start writing about our development journey for a number of reasons.
First, we work primarily in the Godot engine. Godot is great, but the past year has seen a lot of change for the engine with the shift to Godot 4. We have learned a ton from the Godot community and we want to do our part by sharing helpful tips as we learn.
Also, something I’ve noticed in my Godot learning journey is that tutorials and learnings from the community tend to be found in video formats, like YouTube. I personally tend to learn better from written content, and I imagine there are others like me out there.
Along the way we’ve figured out some problems that were hard to us (probably not to more seasoned Godot developers), and we wanted to start writing these challenges and solutions down both for ourselves, and in the spirit of sharing with others that are just starting their own game development and small business journeys.
We are also exploring ways that we can use game development to have a broader social impact. We’ve been exploring ways to use small-scale games in the advertising and education space and help businesses and organizations spread their message in the fun and engaging medium of video games, as a way to replace or supplement traditional video advertisements.
Finally, we want to connect with others and keep learning. While we hope the things we have to say will be useful and interesting to newcomers, we also hope to engage with more experienced devs and others in the industry to get feedback on our ideas.
What to expect from us
We plan to use this publication for a number of types of content related to our journey:
Musings on game development and solutions we’ve reached for some of the challenges we have faced.
Short-form tutorials with concrete examples of solutions.
Announcements from us, such as the launch of new projects like our latest game, Routable.
Sharing of content on other platforms such as YouTube or other social media platforms.
We hope to publish something every few weeks, and we want to build a supportive and friendly community. However, we’re new to this and balancing sharing our learnings with still learning and working a lot on projects. So we hope you’ll follow along and be patient with us.
Conclusion
As I mentioned above, if you’re reading this, I hope you’ll subscribe to this new publication and follow along with us on our game development journey. As you do, we invite you to share your feedback, share other resources that you’ve found helpful, and let us know how we’re doing.
We also ask that we all engage respectfully. We have learned enough to be useful to new gamedevs, but are also still learning every day ourselves. Let’s start a quest to learn and grow together as creatives. Unlike your favorite D&D campaign, we don’t want to run into any trolls on this quest.
Thanks for reading and we look forward to building with you!
